I don't do ART for free by Exileden I don't do ART for free by Exileden
Please read whole artist's comment.

This drawing I did some time ago for a community with an important message. Lately I've heard often those quotes like that, so I decided to twitch into a drawing instead just letters of that quote for a community. This message regards for working artists. And I'm not talking about art as general meaning and art is for money, but the service for others when someone asks us to draw what they want.
I thought also to put there.

That's why we, working artists, don't do any free requests as a service for others when we are asked.
I still get often a requests from people, and here is an excellent quote from my friend ~WildSpiritWolf faq, which explains a lot for those who can't see/understand the view of another person:

Q: Why won't you do a picture/tattoo/etc. for me for free? It's silly that I have to pay to have you make something for me.

A: Please try to see this from another person's point of view. I'm sorry but I do not work for free and have no plans to change that. Commissions are my full time job so if I did art for free, I would have no money. Plus I would be ridiculously busy because so many people would be lining up to get free art from me. So at that point, I would be broke and would be drowning in free art requests which would leave me very stressed and unhappy.

Simply, art is our job. The feeling where we work on art is the same as we would do other job.

You can share that picture and spread around. I permit people to use this on facebook, blogs, websites, communities, tumblr etc. and feature it anywhere. I made it to be shared- we are about to share that art is part of our job to everyone If you agree with this :]
Feel free to share this!

But please DO NOT remove my signature and link to website and do not claim that you drew it. Do not use for also for commercial goals, ask me if you plan to do! :]

For the information: This is my own opinion and feeling with this, as well among the other artist. I made it for my group of artist community where I am in where they share the same feeling about it and that's it. It is NOT a law, order or even "it has to be". Everyone may have different opinions, and if someone things doing free requests is ok, it's totally fine! Free requests aren't bad, but for some people there is a limit reached where some artists can't do anymore due to clear reasons as being working artists. If you agree with this, that's fine, you may share and show your own feelings, if not, that's fine! Just do what you want :) Remember what I posted, it's also my feeling and opinion with others but not with everyone. Everyone has a right to their own feelings and that's a clean explaination why we don't do free requests. Even, personally I have not positive experience with "free requests" from people whom I do not know in the past.
Doing personal art and projects where I put my feelings and free thoughts, I have fun and enjoyment what I love, thus doing commission work is totally different feeling- a feeling of my duty and job.

Personally I still do "free work" which is an exception known as a gifts for my close people who I very cherish, working on art for them I think about them. It has positive feelings of the bonds and memories with them. And another, I'm active person in charity foundations/organizations, where I volunteer doing visual graphics where I also enjoy of a help for others in my foundation. I find it's priceless feeling being part of foundation and helping whose are in a need, being among with those fantastic people and fighting with life crisis.

Since there were many questions regarding art =/= fun, I hope that will explain :] [link]

Also to mention, I think the most beautiful art creations are when we do personal artwork. We put our own thoughts, own feelings, emotions and freedom- our world is put on the paper. No one should comment us what we should do when we create own and personal artwork from the heart.
I found the origin where that part of text quote comes from:

I'm relatively new to drawing for other people, and already I can speak from experience, that I have learned my lesson about doing free art. I actually offered free art and it's surprising how unappreciated it is.  And it's alarming how ungrateful people are to receive free art. No Tip, no acknowledgement, nothing.  Sometimes not even a thank-you.  Artists work hard to develop their skill and to ask for their blood, sweat, and tears for nothing is absurd and insulting.

Honestly this is the worst thing at my school, I only draw thing for free for family-like friends, and family. People don't understand this and it's frustrating

Too much people disrespect artists saying, " oooo, ooooo!! DRAW ME!!!! PLEASE!! FOR FREE TOOOO!!!!!."

If they want good art of themselves, they either pay, or do it, THEMSELVES.

It is always good to remember that not all artists are doing it for fun although it can be fun, art has historically been quite valuable. Even those of us who do not do it full time would often like to be able to make a living doing it.

Hey, I love this illustration! I am currently writing a legal guide for artists - it is going to be a freebie on my website. This piece of work is super appropriate to the subject. Would you give me permission to use this illustration in my guide?
I am also looking for additional illustrations in my guide. If you are interested in illustrating for an artists' legal primer (for free to artists)- can we chat?

How the art is for 'fun', 'childhood' and stuffs? Do they reazile all things are made from arts, many artist give all their works to made the world look beautiful and have to pay to get it. We earn with money becuase our art are very worth it. yes, we can create whatever we like but art is part of money, it help artist to live in realty than in dream.

I do mine for fun and just for the pleasure of people's eyes. Then I realized, I might as well just create for myself. Unappreciative and ignorant people are just so much more abundant.

look, this is a nice drawing, and i appreciate its true & honest message (that artists do this for a living, and that artists need commissions & art projects for money, in order to make a living, its the most reasonable thing, really), but still: one part of your drawing's ''message'' irks me off:

its the part where you say that:

''art =/= enjoyment from childhood'' and the

''art =/= for fun''

why do you say that?

i honestly believe that even a payed artist, a ''gun for hire'', (or a ''brush for hire'' as i like to call my profession), even a payed artist can have ''fun''.

in fact, all the artists start creating art, just for that: for FUN.

they start observing things in life, they watch nature, they start drawing landscapes, sunsets, the birds, their friends, their parents, and eventually they start to develop a personal style, a style and a medium that will eventually define them as to who they are, and what they want to do in life as an artist.

in order to become good at something, you must have those 3 things: the desire to do it, the talent to become good at that specific skill, and to WORK hard in order to become better and better.

if you dont love something, then how are you going to expect to become good at it?
it simply becomes a ''chore'' , a burden, a job that needs to get done, so that you can get paid, and before you know it, you end up hating the thing that you once liked (or pretended to like).

so yes, art IS fun. art = fun, and art = enjoyment & experiences from childhood, because you have to LIVE with something in order to understand it, and because you have to LOVE something, from the bottom of your heart, in order to make it grow into something great.

dont take my message wrong, i agree that ALL working artists MUST be paid for their good work, and thats why i support people who do commissions, and i also understand why people dont do ''free requests'', its because this is their job.
i wouldnt ask from a plumber to do me a free fix now, would i? :D

all in all, you did a good drawing, with a semi-good message (the artists that need money in order to do their jobs was the GOOD message, the ''art =/= fun'' was purely a wrong message, and a false statement, imho)

i like how you drew the girl, her clothes, her handbag, her telescope-like thingy (that stores papers and stuff in it), her shoes and her teddy-bear.
its a cute, nicely drawn picture, and i like it.

keep up the good work, and remember; we must always love something before we start it, otherwise it feels wrong. also, artists can have fun! its the whole meaning of life & creating art in general.

Love the message and the picture.  The two tones look is amazing!  The image of the beat up teddy bear really adds to the message. While it isn't right, I see why people are asking you for your work!

I understand know why did people get painful reason gift and art request.

Said really, drawing isn't give free for people using, take or watching over comic on internet (Internet free?)... maybe people should be buying your comic book, artbook, artwork and thing etc, then you will get money.

Also you should do Commissions, no art request for free.

Shared this on both my tumblr and facebook. Whilst a few of them are not professional artists, some do use their talents in times of need or if they're between jobs, and people think that's a bad thing :/
The only time I'll ever do something for free is if they're a close friend or a family member.

Oh but we should be grateful someone wants to hang our crap on the wall and just do it for free.  It is not worth anything anyway.  People need to snap out of it.  We bust our butts making this and it takes years and years to hone the skills.

Artists should be appreciated by our support especially financially so they be enable to function or act.
We do same with sports but in more ways than one person could imagine.

I draw for a living because of my mother teaching me how to draw and I feel happy that I do. This is why I have watchers because of it and the effort I show and put in my artwork. I never give up on that.
